Where roamlets come from
The Underweb
Under every page there is another one.
Down there
Every page that ever loaded left a little something behind. A stray pixel. Half a sentence. The glow of a button somebody almost clicked. It all drifts down and settles, and over a very long time it turned into a place.
That place is the Underweb, and roamlets have always lived there.
Why it looks like a cat
Nobody has ever seen what a roamlet really looks like.
The moment one notices you, it turns into whatever you were expecting a small friend to look like. Pick a cat egg and you get a cat. Ask it what it is underneath and it will just blink at you.
Why it follows you
Roamlets are endlessly curious about the surface, but it is a big, bright, loud place. So they ride along at the very bottom of your pages, where it is quiet, and peek at the world from there.
Every site you visit is somewhere it has never been. It finds that very exciting.
Where it goes at night
When you close the laptop, your roamlet goes home. Down in the Underweb it has a little plot of its own, right next to the plots of the roamlets your friends brought up.
You can’t visit yet. It’s working on the place.
